New Jersey native Dayna Kurtz began performing her original compositions in public as a teenager, and subsequently spent the better part of a decade touring solo across the back roads of America, selling CD’s out of her trunk and mesmerizing club and festival crowds with her riveting live performances. Along the way, she opened shows for the likes of Richie Havens (who became a fan and lent guest vocals to her debut studio album, Postcards from Downtown).

The last few years has found Dayna winning over new fans in the New York City music scene.  In the past two years she has been invited to open up for Rufus Wainwright, Antony & the Johnsons, and Keren Ann.  Additionally, Dayna has won over fellow “Living Room” habitué Norah Jones, who sings a duet with Dayna on “I Got It Bad…” (From Beautiful Yesterday).  Outside of her new hometown, the legendary Richard Thompson invited Dayna to open up for a coast-to-coast nationwide tour that found Dayna converting some of his faithful fans.

The fan response and critical attention generated by Kurtz’s grass roots touring efforts inevitably drew interest from the mainstream music industry. Despite her indie status, Dayna has found an enthusiastic audience, winning high-profile guest spots on such radio shows as World Cafe, Mountain Stage and NPR’s Morning Edition. But nowhere has the interest in Dayna’s music been more pronounced than in Holland, where Dayna’s debut studio album soared into the top 20 of the album charts on the strength of the hit single “Love Gets in the Way”.  In the summer of 2003, Dayna went from performing in front of 50 people at the Living Room in New York City’s lower east side, to headlining the fabled Paradiso theatre in Amsterdam in front of 1000 people in what would be her first of many sold out shows in the Netherlands in the months to follow.  Dayna has since then discovered a larger audience in Europe, and this spring alone will find her in Greece, Spain, Germany, Belgium and the UK.

But Dayna Kurtz has worked too hard to allow such adulation to go to her head. “Every step I’ve taken has felt really organic, and like they’ve been made at the right time,” she states, adding, “The records I’ve made feel like honest expressions of where I’m at musically, and the making of them has been joyful and interesting.”

“Besides, every musician should feel like a rock star in at least one country.”

“One of the things that I seem to encounter constantly is that I don’t really quite fit anywhere,” observes Dayna Kurtz.   Asked by a European journalist what her music was ‘made of’, Dayna replied, “If you’re at the flea market, you walk past all the fine old antiques and the cheap designer knockoff clothing from China, past the used German leather jackets, and over in the back is an old man with a battered tweed hat who has some blankets on the ground covered with old toasters and a pair of ladies knickers from the 50′s, a snow globe from the 1992 Olympic games, and a box of old men’s watches and broken reading glasses and teaspoons.  I’ll be picking through there.”

The lack of a ready stylistic tag hasn’t stopped the resourceful performer from building a substantial audience—and a compelling body of recorded work—on her own terms. She maintains an enthusiastic international fan base that’s embraced the poetic passion of her songwriting and the communicative power of her voice, an unforgettable, distinctly husky instrument that’s capable of immense depth and sensitivity.  She has also inspired reams of rapturous acclaim from critics and won admiration from her musical peers.

Liz has a bunch of new songs and a new CD that was released this summer !
Sarah also has a brand new CD of her own to promote!

“Longley’s songs swell with honesty and genuine emotion that most of us are unable to admit to but recognize all the same.”, declared ‘The Telegraph’ of New Hampshire. Even music icon John Mayer, who surprised Liz and fellow Berklee music students when he broke into an impromptu rendition of Liz’s song ‘Queen’, has described her music as “Gorgeous…just gorgeous!”

Longley’s songwriting skills earned the Berklee College of Music Songwriting Division Achievement Award in ’08. Moreover, her song “Whatever Goes Up” was ranked No. 2 overall in the college’s well-regarded songwriting contest that year. The song also garnered the all-time No. 1 spot on Garageband.com’s folk chart for best melody and lyrics and nabbed the Grand Prize in Innovation Entertainments’ Low Budget Love Music Competition. In ’09, Liz’s songwriting abilities were again acknowledged when her song “Rush” took first place in Berklee’s annual songwriting competition. Most recently, Liz was awarded Berklee’s top songwriting honor, the Scott Benson Scholarship for outstanding achievement in songwriting.

Liz is often accompanied by guitar talent Sarah Zimmermann. The two team-up for engaging vocal harmonies and a rapport with audiences that is filling coffeehouses and venues throughout the region. Liz has performed at the Philly Folkfest, Club Passim’s in Boston, Tupelo Hall in New Hampshire, and Philly’s World Café. She has shared the stage with Colin Hay, Jeffery Gains, Nanci Griffith, Kenny Rankin, Lucy Kaplansky, Livingston Taylor, and Jonathan Edwards. Her band also just played a headlining show at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC!

Liz calls Sarah a “guitar goddess” and her “musical soul mate!” They’ve been playing together for over 5 years now. Sarah is an alumni of Paul Green’s School of Rock and has toured with Jon Anderson of Yes. Most recently she was in Sweden for a short tour with the School of Rock All Stars. She is also a songwriter of her own and has been featuring her solo material around Nashville, TN !

Don’t miss this month’s featured artist KATE GAFFNEY!

For Kate, music “is all about the songs and the players,” and her second full-length album, The Coachman (DIG Music), finds her blending soulful songwriting and resonant baritone with players she admires from both the Americana and jam-band scenes. Kate admires those genres, she says, because it appeals to “the people who want something new, but who are steeped in the old ways.” These are the song-focused acts she discovered in high school like The Beatles, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and the not-very-sensitive-singer-songwriter riffage of Led Zeppelin.

In 2003, Kate (orignally from Pennsylvania) made a brief stop in Austin, Texas where she met meet the late, great Clifford Antone, musical entrepreneur and talent-spotter, who told her she was good enough to make a living with music. She didn’t stick around Austin, but continued home and landed herself back in Philadelphia, playing clubs and doing a “brutal” internship playing four-hour shows on the Jersey Shore. It toughened her as a performer and inspired another spurt of songwriting which resulted in her first EP, Highways and her first full length album, The New Then in 2005. She also gained more gigging experience with a residency at the World Café Live in Philly and was invited by Americana guru Gene Shay to play on his show on the influential AAA station WXPN.

In 2007, once again armed with inspiration and a batch of new songs, Gaffney went into the studio in Philadelphia, then on to LA to finish recording the tracks that would become her soon-to-be-released, The Coachman. Making the album, produced by Barrie Maguire (Amos Lee, Natalie Merchant), surrounded Kate with a producer and musicians that would help bring Kate’s vision to fruition. She had a lot of help, with a cast of amazing musicians including jamb and stalwart Steve Kimock on guitar, pedal steel ace Greg Leisz, The Innocent Criminals (Ben Harpers’s band mates) and multi-instrumentalists Jackie Greene, Andrew Lipke and Nate LaPointe.

Kate’s growing resume includes supporting Richie Havens, Loudon Wainwright, Jo Dee Messina and Sophie B. Hawkins. Her past travels across the country have also provided Kate with some career shaping opportunities such as singing the National Anthem for the Philadelphia Phillies, performances at Club Passim, The Tin Angel, The Fillmore San Francisco and World Café Live.

Smitten by the music, Kate Gaffney is poised to hit the road ready to support The Coachman with heavy regional and national touring. If all of this isn’t enough from Kate’s relatively young career, she has recently signed with DIG Music (who helped launch the careers of Jackie Greene, Chris Webster and Sal Valentino). Add to this a world-class marketing team from across the country and you have the makings of one hard-to-beat-high-flying-Americana songstress.
